Frequently Asked Questions

What is the age limit?
YSOA Adventures and Service Projects are primarily geared towards middle school and high school age students. However, we occasionally host programs for elementary school age groups, though some activities may not be suitable for them.

Can I do this?
Yes, you can! Though challenging, the adventures are possible for just about anyone to succeed. Whether you have NO experience or YEARS of experience, you will find the adventures both challenging, rewarding, and possible as long as you apply yourself.

How much does it cost?
Usually around $10 - $50 per person per day depending on the activities. This money is used to help cover the costs involved with conducting the activities. Scholarships are available to students in need of financial assistance. Our desire is that every student will have the opportunity to participate regardless of household income. Click here for a Scholarship Application.

What do I get with my paid registration?
Your registration fee helps cover the costs for use of basic equipment and supplies needed to complete the activities, tents/lodging, and YSOA Staff.

What do I need to bring?
A positive attitude is the most important thing you need to bring. You will also need to bring your own essentials, such as clothing, toiletries, and snacks. YSOA will provide basic equipment, like tents, backpacks, and food for select events. A packing list specific to chosen activities will be mailed to each registered participant. Please do not bring radios, walkmans, iPods, electronic games, or fireworks. Cell phones are permissible for contacting parents only.

Who will lead our group?
At least one experienced adult YSOA Staff member will lead your group and will be present at all times. On most activities you will have more than one adult YSOA Staff member, as well as Junior Staff members, working with your group. The number of YSOA Staff will be determined by the size of your group and/or the activities. If you are participating with a Youth Group, your Youth Director or other adult-in-charge may lead your group with YSOA Staff facilitating the activities.

I am a parent. Can I come too?
Yes, parents may attend any YSOA activity. Parents must complete a separate Registration Form and will pay the same fees as their child to participate.
Please note: If you (or your child) participate with a youth group, you will register and pay through your youth director (or other adult-in-charge), and your participation will be determined solely by your youth group leader(s).

What if there is an emergency?
Every activity will have an adult YSOA staff member present at all times who is a veteran outdoorsman with both classroom and experiential training in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. The adult YSOA staff member will have successfully completed training in "Wilderness First Aid" provided by Roane State Community College, and "Adult/Child CPR/AED" provided by the American Heart Association. In the event of an emergency, the YSOA staff member will stabilize the situation and get help quickly.

Can I be a volunteer?
Certainly! We love volunteers! Please contact gary@ysoa.org to discuss how you would like to be involved and to learn about our requirements.
